Antique Snowmobile Club of America recreates first “World’s Championship” Snowmobile Derby --- 50 years later
Fifty years ago, one of the first organized snowmobile races was held at Dollar Lake near Eagle River, in northern Wisconsin. That event fostered the now infamous “World’s Championship” Snowmobile Derby.
On February 2nd, the Antique Snowmobile Club of America recreated that first racing event on Dollar Lake, as the very same makes and models were found participating in those same drag, oval and hill-climb contests! Yes, some 40 of these pioneering snow machines --- some restored and some original --- were seen stretching their legs at the very same venue. Even the Rotary Club, the original sponsors of the 1964 event, was there serving food and refreshments.
On a beautiful clear day, the Lake was ablaze with colorful old iron. Some of the machines were rear-engine and some were front-engine. Some were powered by four stroke engines and some were two stroke. Some drivers were young club members and others looked as old as the machines they piloted.
